Decathlon comes to NI

French sporting goods retailer Decathlon is set to open a 40,000 sq ft store i the same retail park as Ikea, Hollywood Exchange, in Belfast.



Decathlon which covers most sports including cycling has it's own range of bikes winning regular best of test awards in the mags for they're £200 to £2000 MTB's.

As well as MTB's they have a full range of own brand road and leisure bikes plus clothing and accessories ranges.

Founded in 1976 in France Decathlon have over 450 stores worldwide and whilst only having a few in the UK at present has plans for 40 over the next 3-5 years. They're success is put down to huge stores, massive stock and aggressively priced own brand ranges in most sports sectors.

No date has yet been announced for the Belfast opening.

Commencal drops year specific models with the launch of the UK Premier range

Over the years the bike trade has picked up a few odd habits, not least the one of bringing out new versions of every bike every year, even if the only difference is the colour of the paint. In some instances a new version each year makes sense: High end stuff develops at such a rate bikes at this end of the sport need to change yearly to stay current, but for entry level? Does it really make sense?

The date these bikes generally get launched is odd too. Years ago the next seasons bikes came out at the start of the year. In the rush to be the first to launch manufacturers bought this forward into the previous year. To the point some brands were bringing out their new 2010 bikes in July 2009. Daft.

MTB champ loses everything in house fire

A wild-eyed daredevil all his life, professional mountain biker Mark Weir had to be yanked away from a death-defying challenge on Dec. 27.
His house was burning down.

"At first I'm thinking, 'I can control this. I've seen fires before,'" said Weir, 36. "I'm standing there with a garden hose, but the fire is totally refusing the water."



The Novato home in which he grew up contained all his mountain biking medals and trophies from his storied 17-year career.
