The 6th Lisbon Downtown took place today in perfect conditions, with a sunny 27 degrees and in front of one of the biggest Lisbon crowds on record. British rider, 17 year old Rachel Atherton of Animal/Giant, lead a trio of Brits that dominated the women’s racing here today.

In both runs (the second run counting for the win), Rachel took her Giant to a win of more than a second, giving the junior rider her first international elite victory ahead more senior international stars such as Tracy Moseley, Tara Llanes and Kathy Pruitt.

The course, which is only open for training and racing on Saturday, was very slippery in the first training runs. Riders got a maximum 5 training runs before going into the 1st race run, used for determining which 10 women, and 25 men, would race the final.

In the final, Rachel rode a smooth and deceptively fast run, keeping the bike out of trouble and making sure her Maxxis tyres hooked up on the slippery course, full of cobble stones, steps and tram lines.

“I’m lucky I’ve been here before, I think that helps because the training is so limited. The course was a bit different this year, and it was way slippery in the beginning of training, but I’m really excited to have taken the win here, it means a lot,” said a clearly animated Rachel shortly after the race.

Fellow Brit Steve Peat made it four wins in a row (he is still the only man to win the event!) with stiff competition this year from Mick Hannah, Greg Minnaar, David Vazquez and Matti Lehikoinen.

the floating brake is a black arm that can be fitted to the bike so that the suspension remains active under braking. Peaty doesnt use one just to save weight but they do make a difference to the way the bike works especially if you are doing a drop and needing to turn stright after so your stright on the brakes.

Surely you need a plank at the bottom to carry you over the rail?
