Norman Cook aka Fat Boy Slim is to play an open air concert in Portrush this summer, great news? Not for ten Under participants, it's the same weekend!

From the BBC website:

One of the world's top DJs is set to attract tens of thousands of people to a County Antrim beach.

Fatboy Slim, aka Norman Cook, will perform at Portrush Strand in June.

The musician is no stranger to massive beach parties and has held successful gigs on Brighton beach and at Flamengo Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

Last month, Fatboy Slim took part in Salvador's carnival, one of the world's biggest street parties. Up to two million attended the six-day event.

The promoter of the 17 June Portrush beach party, Gary McGuigan, said there would be "seven hours of world-class music".

"Fatboy Slim is bringing with him a 40ft x 40ft video wall, which has been used at Mount Fuji, Electric Picnic in Dublin and Rio de Janeiro - so we are really getting a world-class act here."

Accommodation and restaurants

Jim Curry of Coleraine Borough Council said it had many years experience of dealing with major events.

"These include the Milk Cup and the North West 200. This event is no different," he said.

"We have carried out a major risk assessment for it, we have consulted widely, we have infrastructure in place in regard to guest houses and hotel accommodation and restaurants.

"We have a very safe and secure site. Most importantly we are liaising with the trade for those who want to stay in Portrush and make a weekend of it - we have the nightclubs in place and we have the bars as well."

In July 2002, a beach party for 250,000 fans in Brighton ended with security officials struggling to control the larger-than-expected crowd.

One man died of a heart attack and a woman fell to her death during the free party.

The show was barred in 2003 because of safety fears after emergency crews had difficulty negotiating the crowds.

I'd love to go for the music. However I would wager that the crowd will be mainly chavs, and I don't want to wind up stuck listening to "ayee mate I'm soo maished rite now, man I took like about four 'e's like it's fookin mental like" for the whole gig.

ffs, stop wining about money, go hire a boat! and even still, dont go! save a bit more and wait to see whats happening at slane, i know a couple of promoters and its looking very likely that its gonna be AC/DC headlining! You want to go to a gig? Go!!! you worry about how pricey it is? dont go! lighten up, you could get hit by a bus tomorow and have all this money saved, you wont be able to spend a penny because your dead.
spend it tay feck! have a good time! lifes too short!

Unless you're a student for who £35 is more than your weekly food shop. Alas, for some people income isn't all disposable.

March 20-2006, 05:06 PM
acdc at slane? im there

as for fat boy.. heres what will happen

10000 chavs will descend on portrush on the trains and in cars from 8 am of the morning of the concert. every offy will have sold out of wkd and vodka within 15 minutes, and will take a further 23 minutes to sell out of buckfast and anything else they have on sale. with the proceeds going to the armour plating for the windows of said offys. crowd will be boozed up scum who will end up chucking bottles of piss into the large crowd who have gathered. concert will end and everyone will try and get into the pubs and clubs, but they will be full and the chavs can hang around portrush all night wrecking the joint. leaving a weeks worth of crap for the residents to put up with.

the reason i know? because exactly the same thing happened at the radio one raodshow a few years ago. the bar i worked in had 8 people on the doors and 2 barstaff. some good scraps as well. as i drove home under a hail of bottles i managed to narrowly miss around 45 people standing in the middle of the road having a fight over who had the chavvest burberry outfit on

10undertheben for me

well said sham, i used to work to CBC years ago over the summer and it got so bad at a point that they have now stopped trains and buses running on easter sunday due to some chavs stabbing a busdriver. as for the crap that the residents have to put up with..... i used to pick it up. exhausted litter-pickers and overworked lifegaurds(patching up childrens feet from stepping in broken glass in the sand dunes). this slim girl fat concert is going to end up very very messy, very messy.::yikes::

"ayee mate I'm soo maished rite now, man I took like about four 'e's like it's fookin mental like"

As its in Portrush you are more likely to hear...

"Right Sham, I am as full as a bingo bus boy, took 4 disco biscuits and I am scoobied sham. Luk at the heed on yuuuu, hahahaha, Lets get thu traaikurrs an bury these belfast puffs."

Ahem....
