The old red freeride area was 1 of the first bits of trail to be built at Glentress and the years have taken their toll. When it was built a 4 inch travel bike was probably considered a downhill bike so now with the current generation of hardcore hardtails and freeride full sussers a new trail was long overdue.

The trail is currently under construction and expects to open in Mid-November. From the start line theres a choice of 2 skinny's or stright into the jumps and tabletops. Sneak preview below!

Bookings are now being taken by the ferrys for the first batch of NI riders to put the new trails to the test!

Glentress is one of the 7 Stanes mountain bike trails in Scotland.
Near Peebles about 25 miles south of Edinburgh.

That's more like it. When I was there the 'freeride' area was a bit of a joke when you considered the fact that most XC trails in the 7-stanes had bigger jumps, berms and drops.

New stuff looks good though. Can't wait to ride it. Dead handy as it's right beside a car park!

Not open till mid november at earliest
It'll be crap at the start as its right beside a car park
probably be a queue at the top
yeah i'm a lucky fecker but i prefer the black as its a bit more natural, not really into this bmx track stuff!

For those who don't know Glentress is a working forest and these trails are being built by the Forestry Comission. There are already approximately 70 km of trail in the forest specifically for mountain biking.
Forest Service in Northern Ireland have refused to build trails like this, so if you want some of the same write letters to your MP, Forest Service, DARD, DCAL, CAAN, Local council, Local and National Papers, Cycling Ulster and the Sports Council. With a wee bit of pressure you could be riding this type of trail in your local forest!!!!!!!!

btw, at the end of the three skinnies (each with a 18 inch/2 foot drop off the end) is a 5 foot vertical stone step down with about a 10 ft run in and about 4ft of flat after it before the tranny. You have to get your speed up on the skinny to make the drop.

At least there's good access for the ambulances!

I have ridden it this weekend (18th-december). It is immense, the drops have been panneled up with wood but they are easy to clear with speed. Loads of people were there, some of them were riding in large trains, doing no-handers and such. There are 2 main trails, one is all jumps but this is unexpectedly tyreing as its hard to breathe when pulling up all the time. The other trail has a line up of 3 different sized drop platforms, which lead to a large slope followed by 2 snappy wallrides. once the two trails have joined they continue on into a large box, around 12 foot. This is the main spectacle. Loads of people watch some manual along its flat top, dropping into the slope and out the bottom. great fun, i went to ride the entire red but didnt want to leave the freeride area so i stayed there all day. The good thing is that it can all be ridden on a hard tail, how fast is up to you!

Can't wait to get out in the spring time.

Hope it's not wrecked by then though!

Have a feeling this section will be the busiest trail in the country!

been finished a while now
nobody was able to ride on it before it was finished as they build pretty sturdy fences over the jumps
