We are talking greatest movies ever so no Lucky Number Slevin and The Butterfly Effect don't even come close and most of these films mentioned don't cut it.

The Last Emperor.

We probably need to sub-divide it a bit such as greatest movie, greatest movies no ones ever heard of, greatest movies but you don't know why it's so good cuz it's a bit ****, greatest movie everyone thought was rubbish but actually it's awesome etc etc but can anyone be bothered doing that?

The very very bet movie, ever, is Get Carter.

Closely followed by from that era..

Room At The Top
Look Back In anger
The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner.
Saturday Night & Sunday Morning
Alfie

MOving on a decade or so...

Midnight Cowboy
The Long Good Friday
The Graduate
Easy Rider
Jaws
Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory
Annie Hall (In fact all Woody Allen films)
Halloween

Then into the 80's...

Alien (Which I think was actually the 70's)
Ghostbusters
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Terminator
Batman

Then the 90's...

Nothing.

The 00's..

Another vote for Smokey & The Bandit. For me it wins hands down as the best film I've ever seen.

Sure, there are lots of other good shows, some really good (Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, for example), but the greatest film ever, without any shadow of a doubt, is Smokey & The Bandit.

Look there are just too many movies to list, and it's too hard to distinguish between them which are the best of the best and why.

... and at the end of the day, it's only really a matter of opinion.

It will be funny to see which movies from this thread turn up in the worst movies ever thread lol.

Exactly Petrolhead - a matter of opinion/taste etc etc. Its a thread on Mtbrider, it doesnt have to be a full debate! Altho some people take it a bit serious on here, if you do then you end up in a huff...

Ya, thanks for that!

Ach man, I'm only poking fun, sure I bet you'd whip my arse around the trails anyway hehe.

How come you don't think there are any great films from the 90's onwards, there are loads of masterpieces from then on.

What about films like Braveheart, or The Wind That Shakes The Barley or The Craic?

All great shows

Oh yeah, and what about both of the new Batmans, DEADLY! :D

MrNuts

All great shows

Both Crap, with a capital C.

Braveheart factually incorrect but at least mel gibson got his head chopped off

The wind and barley, WTF,,, no idea what that was about, they wern't looking too many people outside of ireland to understand or see that one then!!!!

Just didn't understand it at all, no idea what was going on or where! some star wars titles at the start would have been good.

The passion of the christ was good. Some things don't change over 2000 years have passed and you still can't beat a good crucifiction!

Just didn't understand it at all, no idea what was going on or where!

It was set in Cork, but it was supposed to portray the idea that it could have been set anywhere in Ireland around that era, and it is a pretty good dramatization of what was happening.

Yeah, i got the cork connection from the accents, just didn't understand it thats all,

i don't understand time travel but i liked back to the future. thats my point!

Was it not called the hand that shakes the barley? Either way, not bad, but certainly don't deserve the greatest tag.

The problem with movies in the last ten years or so is the studios now produce movies for one purpose: To make money. Now obviously they've always wanted to make money, but passion also came into it. Now all the "great" directors are more interested in getting their names in lights than making good movies. IMO.

The art of good film making is dying.

And Nuts, Boxing Helena? Purlease!

Steve - when you get to the stage where you say "Everything is ****, back in my day everything was better"... its time to take a step back, put on your slippers and realise that you are moving on.

I suspect you are turning into a grumpy old man rather than just a grumpy man.

Or maybe you just havent seen as many films in the last few years as you did before!
