My daughter has announced she wants one for Christmas. How expensive are they to "run"? Thinking of an Ipod touch but I was wondering is it a gaping black hole of expensive downloads and would I be better looking at an alternative like Zen?

Once you have bought the iPod you don't need to spend any more money apart from money to charge it.

If you are downloading apps there are hundreds available which are free.
There are also alot ranging from 50p to about £6 for games and general apps.

Before you can download an app you can set the iPod to require the itunes password so if you set it up with your own iTunes account and dont tell your daughter the password she wont be able to buy any without your permission.

Definitely best off going for an iPod rather than a Zen.

Santa* is bringing my 10 year old son an iPod Nano. He has got into music and music vids in a big way recently and also wanted a camera. The Nano is pretty cool! I have a couple of Shuffles and a Touch and they are a dinky bit of bling!

*Amazon posted it over 3 weeks ago though and its way overdue!:(

You can download your CDs onto it. Downloads are about 0.79.

download a think called gettube to your computer first.

this means, if you tell the download to go to i-tunes as an audio file you can pretty much get any song, including live performances.

then just pull it from i-tunes to your i-pod. alright there might be the very odd song you cannot get, but sure whats 50p every fortnight, and that depends how much you are doing it.

gettube is the way to do it, especially if you want live (you just need to hoke 'very slightly may i add' to get good quality) stuff, generally its fine.

p.s i have been doing this for two years and it brings me so much joy as a fan of a band who have played about 3,000 concerts! no one should really have to buy music unless your still anal and have to have the album material hard copy when it comes out, which is something i will also admit to.

Yep, their a doddle - would recommend ITunes / Ipod as well just so easy to use.
As above singles cost £0.79 new albums £7-8 older ones less and of course you can put every cd you own (or beg steal borrow) and throw them on to. My daughter has a Ipod and a Itouch (benefit of being from a divorced family!!) and she uses the Ipod more than the touch - she's 13

I've had several differnet types of Mp3 players, but I have to say that iPods are the only way to go. The sound quality coupled with the really good standard headphones on them are astonishing, I have never been able to appreciate my music the way I can on an iPod.

I got an iPod nano not so long ago, and it never leaves my pocket, it's like my young person's pace maker lol.

Having my iPod touch with its Facebook app in my pocket is one of the reasons I hate Facebook

The standard phones are grim, spend a few quid on a decent pair (try sennheisers the 300's are excellent) and enjoy...

I might be seling some Bose Triports shortly if anyone would be interested...

Apple are having a sale tomorrow as it's Thanks Giving in America today (generally the day after Thanks Giving is big sale day in the states). Check out the apple store or online tomorrow it might be a good chance to grab a bargain.

Typical I've only just gone and bought a bloody huge iMac and they are dropping the prices :-(

Thanks to everyone.

Went to the Apple store last night and got her an 8gb Ipod touch. Some very nice shiney things in that shop.
