Looking for some advice on my bottom bracket. I am currently running a Truvativ Firex GXP crankset with Truvativ GXP cups. I recently removed the cups as the bearings seemed to have had there day. Upon removal the thread on the bottom bracket shell is slightly rung on one side. What are the options for rethreading the bottom bracket shell? There appears to be a park tool for doing this at about £700! The cups are jiggered anyway and will need replaced. Any suggestion on what I should go for?

the parktool bb thread tool, is used for chasing the bb threads (ie making sure that they are all ok and there is no damage) and also it is used to face the bb shell for use with external bottom brackets

most bike shops with a workshop would have one, i would recommend asking them to do it with their tool rather than you buying the tool yourself to sort out 1 frame ;)

what they would be able to do is chase the bb shell thread so that the thread will not cause damage the the bb cup thread, (which in turn would damage the bb shell thread more), depending on how much good thread is left then you can decide whether to put a different brand of bb cup in (like a shimano saint with a truvativ adaptor, which has a longer threaded section which could reach beyond damaged threads in the shell to the good threads beyond the damage), or to use a standard square taper bottom bracket that screws into itself rather than the bike threads (i think the company is called acorn??) and a different crankset, or to scrap the frame. i dont know how much scope there would be for helecoiling.

which side is the bb shell toast on? if its the left then you have better options

Cheers for the advice goat. The threads don't appear to be to bad so hopefully a bike shop will be able to do something with them. The damage is on the left hand side of the BB. Will start googling now to see what my options are. Scrapping the frame will hopefully be a last option ::yikes::

probly just chase them then and run a better bb, seriously 2010/2009 saint cups would sort it with a shimano-truvativ adaptor.

because your rhs is still ok then youve got no problems mounting bb hardware (chain devices etc)

Let us know how you get on. Hopefully that frame can be salvaged.

Drummerboy, I have a sneaky suspicion that Santa could be bringing a shiny red Intense frame this Chrimbo.

I'm running a truvativ gigapipe dh bottom bracket at the minute, have been since the end of the summer, and she's going fine! Not a thing wrong with it.
Getting a turbo trainer set up for winter though and that'l be the real test!
