Since O2 lost exclusivity on the iphone they are now offering official unlocking to all existing customers.

http://o2.co.uk/unlockmyiphone

This should be really useful when picking up a second hand phone if you want to put another sim in it, or when you're abroad, you can use a local carrier.

Anyone know how this works with jailbroken original iPhones?

The wifes is still on something like firmware 1.14 I think it was, it's one of the original iphones and was jailbroken and used on Vodafone. It's never been used on 02.

I\ve googles but couldn't find anything, anyone any idea how to get it unlocked?

You would need the original and still active o2 Sim to get it unlocked by o2.

If its jailbroken then it can be unlocked easily enough though as its an original iphone.

I assume you mean you want it unlocked 'legally' by o2 which isnt going to happen unless you have the original o2 sim.

It is currently unlocked though as you are using a vodafone sim

======

My o2 unlock took about a week.

I put in for an unlock the other day, so will see how it goes. Mind you I see you need to hook up the iPhone to iTunes with a SIM from a different carrier for it to complete the process, and of course I only have my O2 SIM at the moment.

Whilst on the subject, any ideas what to do when your iPhone 3G reaches the end of its contract. My contract is up in January, and I think I can upgrade a month early to a 3GS. Wont be doing that though, I'm more than happy with the 3G and for the extra £ the 3GS isnt exactly much of an upgrade.

I've been considering sticking with my 3G and going on to a Simplicity contract. Has anyone tried this yet? Think you can get a decent deal on minutes/texts for around £15p/m and then get the unlimited data bolt on. Can live without the free Wifi via. Cloud etc. as its pants any way. As it is only a one month cancellation on Simplicity it would still leave me free to upgrade to a newer iPhone should one come out that looks like a significant improvement... Is it too good to be true?

Hmm, I might have the original sim, but it's doubtful.

Assuming I can find it, do I need to insert it, put the phone back to it's original unbroken firmware, then apply via itunes or summit?

Just had a look on the o2 site again, and I have a sneeking suspicion they're making unlocking harder than it need be, in the hope I guess people don't unlock them. I wonder just how legal the procedure they're putting in place is?

Apply through web page linked above ie http://o2.co.uk/unlockmyiphone

Having the sim wont be enough, the sim would need to be still active which would mean someone has been paying £30 minimum a month unless it was a Pay as you go sim in which case it needs to have been active less than 12 months ago.

You could always try it with an 02 PAYG, nothing to loose really other than a few days vodafone use.

02 unlocking isnt that hard, enter a few details and click submit.. ?

They might make it hard for people that have jailbroken their iphones and therefore have taken potential revenue away from O2. O2 have paid a premium to apple for each iphone knowing they can make their money back through 18 month contracts at £30+ that is unless you unlocked it and stuck another providers sim in it.

Did this work ok for anyone ? I have a iphone and it was unlocked until I went onto itunes and it asked me if I wanted to download something, so I clicked yes and it wiped my phone back to 02. When I read the papers I got with the phone it said DO NOT CLICK THIS ! So I need it unlocked again ! Rage

I'm guessing you got bought an iPhone that was previously jailbreak'd?

you will need to download some apps from the net and jailbreak it again. I know now how to do this on macs but no idea if your using a windows machine.

My iphone 3GS (16GB) was bought on O2, I have no reason to change the provider or the tariff because I am pleased with the phone and the cost.

If it's a first gen model, and you get nowhere, I can have a go at it as I've just sorted out my wifes iPhone.

But... You need to understand that if it bricks it, I'm not liable. Also, I'll need to speak to your parents beforehand as I'll be telling them the same. And I'm taking no responsibility for anything that might go wrong with the phone during or after Jailbreaking it for you. And you'll need to leave it with me for a few days.

Appreciate that Steve, I am going to go into to 02 store tomorrow and see what the score is. As it has been jailbroken before does that make it easier to do again ? Was a strange thing that just popped up and said download new version so I clicked it and it stop working with my sim card. How risky is the process of jailbraking it ? I will get back to you, thanks

If the phone was originally an O2, and it's done it's 18 month contract with them, then O2 might unlock it for you. Otherwise they'll most likely try to tell you what've done is illegal, which it's not.

Jailbreaking a phone messes with the OS, and firmware, and stuff, so there is always a risk of bricking it.

The pop up window in iTunes asked if you wanted to update the firmware (like an OS that sits below the main OS), you said yes, but this overwrote your Jailbreak'd firmware and returned the phone to it's original state, that is locked to O2.

Think I am sorted Steve, went into town and a shop said they could do it but I would have to wait 7 day's and it would cost £25, but they also said that there other shop in Armagh could do it as I waited, so I went down and noticed that there was another shop beside it which only charged £20 so I left it in and waited a hour and a half for them to turn around and tell me that they had just broke my phone ! In a rage I took it down the road to the next shop who said they can defo fix it and I will have it tomorrow. Thanks for the help Steve appreciate it. Jonny

Both shop's said they couldn't unlock it, not sure why but they can't. Looks like I will be useing a 02 sim card now, only problem is I am on contract with Virgin mobile.

It normally takes a few days/weeks/months for the latest firmware/update to be cracked.

Certainly for cracking iTunes, the cracks used to always run a couple months behind the updates (at which point, apple would release another minor update)

What version us it?

Don't know it's a 2g if that makes any differnce, Fix a phone checked it out as I waited and they said that they had the right whatever they use and it could be done in a few hours, then today they rang me to say that they couldn't do it. Rageing !

Steveb

I will defo get back to you Steve, I am going to quiz the shop on what I need to do, and why they can't do it. Whats the worst that can happen if it goes tits up ? Thanks again

Steveb
December 30-2009, 07:23 PM
Worst that can happen is the phone gets bricked. Which means it gets turned into a nice paperweight.

I Jailbreak'd my wifes 2g last week and it was fine, but that's not to say another won't go tits up.
