Considering getting myself a nice amp and speakers for use with my tv, ps3, music etc.
How much do you realistically need to spend to get decent equipment?
Any recomendations?

Depends on a lot of factors but for about £500/£600 you should get a half decent system Its like anything you can spend 10 times that just depends what your after, some people will spend that on cables alone. Try richer sounds for a decent av amp and a 5.1 speaker package, prob the easyiest option.

try these for starters -

Sony and onkyo do some nice av recievers and if you want to keep it simple with matched rated speakers etc then a speaker package would be best. Kef, mordaunt short and tannoy are good. Join richers sound VIP club online for some more discount.
Sony have just brought out a wireless speaker system or @ least the rears are wireless saves trying to hide the cables.

Richer Sounds in town mate. I've got a Yamahe Digital 6.1 Amp, 4 quality floor standers and a centre speakers. All for just under £400
(don't buy cable from Richer sounds, they sell cheap amps etc, but bum you for cables)

yeah, agree with that. got my denon 1909 from richer sounds for 299. it was 429 everywhere else! also, got decent floorstanders from there as well, although these days, it does all seem to be speaker packages.
for cables, try audiovisualonline.co.uk or thatcable.com. i just bought some really decent cables and connects from them. Thatcable have a whathifi recommended hdmi cable for a fiver.
and now for the arguement...who believes a digital cable is a digital cable, and who believes that the cable CAN make a difference to a digital signal? just thought i would throw that in. i have heard both arguements and am still cynical. lol

I got a used Denon amp on ebay for £40 and a pair of brand new Mission M71 bookshelf speakers for £70 odd. I'd get floorstanders bit didn't have the space. The sound is unreal for just over a hundred quid. Rich, full, lifelike.

digital cable, buy the cheapest you can find. The signal either gets there or it doesn't. 1 or 0. If the receiving device misses part of a signal, well, thats what oversampling is for.
Analogue cable, buy the best you can afford. Shielding and preservation of signal quality (up to a point) will make sure the analogue amps are amplifying the signal, not interference.
Nowt wrong with speaker packages, likely to have properly tonally balanced outputs, and a good sub sat setup can be very satisfying. I prefer having floorstanders as my front pair, match the centre and surrounds and a sub for added movie whump. Then turn off the sub and use it in stereo for listening to music, but the av amp (a modest yamaha) sounds keek compared to my marantz class a (low power, runs hot as feck) music only amp.
