OK, I bought my daughter he first pay as you go phone on the virgin network today.

I then ordered he a ringtome from the internet but I couldn't open the text to get the tone. When I rang Virgin they told me I had to pay £15 to unblock the phone.

I bought the phone beacuse it had certain features and put credit on it. Why should I now have to pay more (other than call charges) to actually use the features I've paid for when buying a moderately expensive phone? Is this normal?

You should only need to unlock a phone if you want to use it on another network.

Is she going to use say a 02 sim in her Virgin phone ?

If she is then Virgin can charge you as they subsidise the phone in the first place, assuming they will make money out of you over the next year or so with call charges etc.

You can also take it to your local independent phone shop whee they can unlock it for a fee.

There are also loads of places online to unlock different phones. What make and model of phone is it ?
