Some chain devices are designed to run behind the BB. Have a look at the E13 DRS (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=12768)

I have one on my Banshee XXX and they work a treat

Aye, one of them would probably more secure, and less parts to break when it all goes wrong! But, when I get a new bike()then it'l be nice to be able to take the chainguide on and be able to bolt her onto my ISCG tabs and away I go :p

Damn things cost a fortune though!
Anyone know of any good deals etc!?

They come with ISCG mount holes as well so you can mount them either way.

They are that price everywhere unless you can pick one up 2nd hand.

sure if you don't have the mount holes do you just not split the bottom bracket and do away with one of the BB spacers and put that in it's place ?

E13 definitely the way to go?
Whatabout blackspire, gamut etc.?

I put a Blackspire Dualie on my Marin hardtail as the chain kept bouncing about, and came off several times every ride (not too confidence inspiring on rough trails or ripping at a jump). At the time I regarded it as the best 70 dabs i'd spent on a bike. I've had no chain moments since.

With hindsight though, I get a single ring version as I only ever use 1 front ring anyway. It's probably a tad heavier than the E13, but saving cash outweighs (supa-pun! :p) saving weight for me.

Gamut only do a Single front ring at the mo. Just got a Blackspire one to try on my new hard tail so will have to see wat way it works out. But the E13 one is a really good job and that one at £35 on fleebay is a steel. You could always buy a new smaller bash guard and still save a few bob

Rab that chain device was on my glory and it never dropped the chain once. Even riding Rostrevor.......

Sounds spot on to me Paddy thanks again. Just need to get a set of forks and the frame re-sprayed and I'll have this hardtail sorted.

Aye, I'll check out all the recommendations and keep an eye on Ebay, might take thon E13.
As another question, could I get away with a 34-40(38 if I was going for the Blackspire) chainring setup? What sort of differences, if any will this make? Would 40t be too big for a DH/DJ/everything:) bike?
Thanks again.

Monty personally I would stick on a 36t middle ring and loose the big ring keep the granny at 22t, if your just gonna be using it for trails. Anything bigger than that and you'll prob find yourself in the granny ring alot. But if your gonna be riding on the road a lot then you might want to change both rings

KRab, That one on ebay, seems tempting!
Would you happen to know what model it is?
SRS?

You want My Saracen Havoc.
You know yourself it has rarely ever dropped a chain over the past 2 years (about 3 times max altogether I think) and it has no chain device :-) rostrevor and all! Its just the build quality and well thought through frame design that youd expect from saracen.
£275 and your problems are sorted (you'll get better brakes too.. you know you love the matching goodridge/maxxis bling ;-))

Sure, but you still cant escape the fact that I'll still be over-taking you as your at the trackside fixing your chain for the third time of the run :p
I dont trust my suspension anymore, dampning has gone in both ends and im really waiting her to go tbh.
Im only slow when im in a big group, Get me a working hardtail (not yours, crappy narrow bars) or an sx trail and then you can make your hurtful accusations :)

Bring it on :) Give me an SX Trail and be ready to revise my arse any day:p

Lol, I would quite like a working hardtail too! Although, by the start of the summer shes gonna have new front disc, new pads(front and back), a rear brake lever that's not held together by elastic bands(although I am awful proud of that!:D) a new bottom bracket(it's time is truly up, a year of tightening it after every ride is starting to get to me!), a chain device, and possibly wider bars and shorter stem.
But feck, I need some money first!::yikes::

Oh I never said I was faster, just that there is inevitable chance that your GT will fail you in keeping your chain were it should be wouldn't be very helpful :)
Ehh revision? No thanks, Ive had enough of that..
Im just 'taking it easy' for now, not because im wrecked or giving up in competing (which I have BTW ;-)) but im not replacing any major parts anymore- Im getting the funds together with these freelance jobs and its looking like early 2010 might be realistic on the new bike front.
If my current steed fails before then I'll just build more trails and take pictures. tbh I think Im getting a better builder than I am a rider now lol

:D, cheers Penguin but sadly none of them are of use to me! Well, unless you could do me an exceptional deal on the mech as I'm currently running a bent one!
Lindsay, a hope mini lever, had a crash in Moneyscalp, was in too high a gear in the top section, was pedalling like a mad man to get the gears shifting.. and then my pedal got caught on a nice big rock in the rock garden and when I got up and checked out the bike, my lever was completely out of the 'socket'.
Seem to have retrieved all the parts, minus something springy :(, whatever it is that keeps the lever in it's place when it's not being pulled and gets the lever back into it's placed after you've pulled it.. Maybe no.11? http://www.hopetech.com/database/mini_lever_exp.gif
You wouldn't happen to have a 203mm disc kicking around :)?

@Jonny.
2010! You lucky man! I'm going to be darn lucky if I can get one before I'm 15/16.. so 2011/12! Although, if I grow any more(which sadly seems to unlikely cos I haven't in ages:(!) the Ruckus is going to be impossible to ride on the roads! Sore atm and with a shorter stem it'l be worse :(

Well thats what Im hoping, im thinking second hand though so up to £1000 max (or more.. just depending on how long I am willing to not spend for :-)).
Knowing me it'll be later on next year. There may also be the vague chance that Ill get a small amount of funding but thats unlikely. Meh, I'll just have to see.
Wider bars might be a bit more comfortable on your bike, it felt a little squashed when you had it at alta..

Got the DRS of ebay. 41 all in :)
Sure I'll need one of those bb to iscg adaptor jobs?(like ohno mojo recommended)

Kona Rab
June 14-2009, 03:04 AM
No you might not need one. Some of those E13's mount directly in behind the BB.

Your prob just missing the Circlip off the brake lever they pop out all the time if you hit them in a crash. I had a few kicking about but sold them with the brakes a couple of months back.
