I know this was debated at the start of the year so I was wondering how the guys who were buying got on and what they think of the TVs after a few months usage?

Im in the market for a TV with about 650-700 to spend. Mostly the family watch kids tv, Emmerdale etc etc and play the Xbox 360. I like my movies and have a Bluray DVD. The current 32" LCD is wired through a biggish sound system.

So, should I buy a 42' Panny Plasma for around 500ish or a 37' 1080p LCD at around 650ish. Will the 1080p really make a difference watched at about 8' distance?

Thanks

P

At that screen size and distance the difference between 720p and 1080p is negligible.

If your kids play A LOT on the Xbox get an LCD (LCDs work better with games than plasma). If on the other hand you watch more movies/sport then go for plasma.

I have a 42" Panny (720p) you are more than welcome to come and have a look at.

The 50" plasma jobbie I got about a year ago is brilliant. No idea what is it, Lylo guided me, but it cost £750 and was a bargain. Do a search, there is a thread about it.

Can't comment on plasma but I've a 42" Sony LCD full 1080 HD jobby. More than happy with it. Use it for gaming and for tv/movies which is why I went LCD. Came with a 5 years guarantee asweel so you couldn't beat it with a big stick ( well you actually could and they would fix it)

Only one other thing I can say from speaking to TV dealers who've been in the game for years and that was to avoid LG or Samsung... not because they were a bad make or TV, but that after the year's guarantee, if you needed anything replaced or fixed they were a bastard to try and source parts for.. Was tld better stick with Sony or Panasonic

Just my opinion

I've got a sony 40W4000 about 6 months ago. When i did my reseach then, it was pretty much the best 40" LCD around.

SD tv isnt amazing through it, but then its not going to be. Playing a PS3 through it, along with other HD sources' - it is unreal.

5 year warrenty with mine too.

I know bugger all about TV's but this is the one thing I hear a lot.

What do you buy if you watch nothing but Footy on TV and play games on it all the rest of the time?

DO I have to buy 2 TV's? :(

But seriously - Is there a half way house sort of thing?

Can't comment on the playing games, tho it looked alright when I ran some stuff through my pc, but for me the 42" Panasonic plasma was a great decision. Watch a lot of films and download tv shows and the picture is smooth & clean from a similar distance you'll be at penguin.

I figured the pixellation you can get on a big LCD would give me headache after a while at that distance but have had no complaints at all with the plasma.

Richer Sounds behind Castle Court gave me a good deal, check out their website for prices & the shop will match

yeah, I can vouch for that too, I got a panny plasma from richer sounds and couldnt be happier with it, with plasmas though the only thing is, you have to 'break it in' I was told that it would be better for the tv to only be used for tv and dvd's for the first 2/300 hours of usage.

I chose plasma over LCD in the end as the picture quality is superior in my opinion. Better colours, better resolution, true blacks and less tracers on moving images ie. like when you're watching over paid poofs kicking a ball about in the pub and blue/red on green looks really messy, like the colours have bled.

but yeah, i'm less of a gamer these days, but the tv/playstation still looks brilliant and the picture is pin sharp.

Penguin, if you're watching the tv from 8' away I would go much bigger that a 40". (any bigger and you will see the pixels on the screen) There really isn't much difference with plasma and lcd nowadays, high end stuff yes but your talking mega bucks. Sony, samsung, and especially LG have very good tv's out at the minute. It all comes down do budget and what floats your boat. 40" sony, hang it on the wall sit back and drink beer put the leg up!

No pixels on a plasma rochey, that was my reason for choosing to pay a bit more

Thanks for the advice chaps!

Settled for an LG PQ3000 42 plasma.Started to lean towards the plasma and did a side by side viewing of the Panny, Samsung and LG plasmas using Freeview, Sky HD and Bluray and ultimately I preferred the LG. Also did a side by side of the LG and a 1080p LCD and I really preferred the LGs picture - even watching BBC HD on both. The LG was just...nicer.

My little pet dragon even likes it!

And Xtravision are doing 4 Blurays for 4 nights for 4 quid! Sorted!:D

Good choice penguin.

Jac I forgot to say that there is NO pixelation with plasma! That was the point I was trying to make.
