Right then what forests do you ride in? What age are you all (don't really fancy getting thrashed by a load of young guys.....lol) What sort of riding do you all favour? I am fairly new to the whole mountain biking thing, although I have been building bikes now for about a year or so (just don't get much time to ride them what with work, 3 kids and nobody really to go out riding with etc)? What time on a Thursday do you lot go out riding?

I ride at the downhill forest, ballycarton etc quite a bit. Wouldn't really head around the town so much unless around the uni

In sparks absence, the route afaik is from under new bridge to Castleroe then back to Somerset forest and over to Mountsandal and repeat. Think in all it works out about 40k? All on fireroads & paths but by evening there aren't as many dog walkers to annoy you. They do it over winter too but you need lights for that.

Should've been very obvious to you. ;)

Not sure they still do the same route, now that the light evenings are here.

Pm Spark you're number and she should be able to put you in touch with one of the guys that goes out most often.

Jac has it just about right dont let the 40k put you off as pace on first loop is as fast as the slowest person (norm me) and then second lap optional.

Jac it may be obvious who I am but not sure about who you are....?

Anyhow scoobster pm me your number and i will put the other's in touch with you they norm send a txt to all each week with meeting place and time.

I'm in portrush, but available most evenings to participate in any outings around the Coleraine area. If there is a Thursday night run this week could someone let me know the time etc, I've gotta get out on my bike more other than just commuting to work!

There was a bit but last I heard it had been demolished by FS, clearing jumps and thinning trees. Haven't been round it in a while. Not hard to find what is there tho if you go in at the top gate

There were a few jumps and stuff in Downhill forest John but they felled loads of trees so there's only an odd singletrack and mostly paths. Nothing like Ballycarton but good enough for a bit of xc exercise.

Sounds like my bike apart from Fox forks are black, would take the odd spin around there.
Give us a shout if you want to head out some time.

Essentially Head for Binevenagh, off the Bishops road, I've cycled there a few times from the Port, the Bishops road is a killer. The trail leading down from the lake at the top is pretty good, but was undefined the last time I went as you enter the forest descent, due to foresty work.

the ballycarton car park is on the aghanloo road.on the left as you go towards limavady.always a couple of riders about on a sat or sun morning.would be more downhill riders than xc.

Has anyone done the binevenagh cliff edge trail that drops into the forest. The top part of the forest there has been logging going on?

Or is this part of Ballycarton?

I haven't done it recently but when I did it a few years ago I thought it was sh*t on a stick.

I was up that way last week, really fun trail! as it enters the forest theres one part where you have to get off the bike and jump over a fallen tree trunk but apart from that its great!!

yeah, that's a great trail, although a bit undefined in parts once you drop down into the forest (and it links up woith other trail sections as it drops down the cliffside). it shares a bit of the walkers' trail there too. last time I was up some work had been down carving out routes, berms and jumps etc. there's also a nice section that crosses rickety northshore into one of the fields adjacent to the fire road and has a few drops and jumps etc. haven't been up there in a few months now though, can be hit and miss imo and when the weather's been wet it doesn't dry out very well at that high end of the forest and the trail can be just mush and slop. tree felling as mentioned too. and if you park at the lake up top, it's a bitch of a 'day out' if the riding's crap!

haven't got to ballycarton yet though, definitely will now in the next couple of weeks though.

also from the coleraine area - so i'm definitely up for thursday night rides if something's on the go.

Worth a run out for sure. Always some guys about on Saturday/Sunday. probably best tagging along as it can be hard to find some of the good trails if you have'nt been in a while.
