Some geezer I know wants me to replace a broken spoke on his rear wheel...
How important is it to accurately measure the rim, hub etc for a single spoke?
If i fit one that is definitely long enough can i just get by with ensuring it is tensioned correctly and not too long so it pokes out through the rim hole?

Is it just me or does that question make no sense?
In an attempt to answer what I think the question is...
Yes, it's important to get the correct length spoke. And once installed you'll need to re-tension the entire wheel, else other spokes will start to break.

Pfft
Its just you. The question makes perfect sense.
This Geezer will have to stump up the bucks for a wheel rebuild then.
just measure the length of one from the same side, stick new one in and tension it up, make sure wheel is straight and rest of spokes are tight..

A rebuild is a bit OTT, just re-tension the rest of the spokes once the new one is in place.

I recall a lad on ebay selling a spoke, it might still be available!
