for biking photography, the one thing that will ruin a shot is shutter lag, ie how long between pressing the button and the shot being taken. Ususllay by the time a point and shoot has autofocussed, sorted its shutter speed aperture and ISO, the rider is gone.

Buy a cheap DSLR, or you'll just get frustrated. It will also get you into the world of proper photography. Try The nikon D40 or the Canon Eos 350d are a good place to start.

Ignore megapixel numbers, an old 6MP DSLR will easily blow away this years 12MP compact.

It may cost a few quid more than your budget, but if you buy a compact for fast moving stuff ie bikes, you will only get frustrated as it wont do what you want it to do.

Yep! Youd definately be safer waiting a bit longer and saving up for an entry-level DSLR if your thinking of taking it more seriously, the whole guess work with the lag gets very annoying after a few attempts.
the Canon 350d (http://catalog.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Digital-Rebel-XT-EOS-350D-Digital-Camera-with-EF-S-18-55mm-Lens_W0QQ_fifptsZ1QQ_pcatidZ119QQ_pidZ56003352QQ_t rksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em271) is going for about £250 give or take. (very good deal here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Canon-350D-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-Lens_W0QQitemZ120403578121QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Ca merasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=i tem120403578121&_trksid=p4295.c0.m299&_trkparms=240%3A1318))
the Nikon d40 (http://catalog.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-D40-Digital-Camera-with-18-55mm-lens_W0QQ_fifptsZ1QQ_pcategidZ625QQ_pcatidZ119QQ_p idZ56434623QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em271) is going for about the same (this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-D40-Digital-Camera-with-18-55mm-lens-BNIB_W0QQitemZ130299698970QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Ca merasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=i tem130299698970&_trksid=p4295.c0.m299&_trkparms=240%3A1318)is a pretty good deal-brand new!)
both of them are great cameras for starting into photography and are much better than many compact cameras, not just for quality but for speed and the positioning of the buttons/build quality. I would say after handling and shooting with both I would say go for the d40. Even though im a devout canon shooter I still think the d40 is a more solid machine in the beginners scope with a nice standard lense aswell. (cant believe I just said that )

Although thats just my opinion so you should pop into jessops and try handling both of them and see which feels right, their spec is pretty much the same so its just up to which sits best in your hand :-) oh and dont buy anything in jessops. ripoff.

I got a Fujifilm finepix s8000. When i payed for it the price came up at £125 with a 2gb memory card..The price tag was £200 with no memory card. so i think i got a good deal.
When I hold the button half way down the camera focus's then click it the whole way down and it takes the image stright away..Thanks again lads for the help.
