Can you move your wheel from left to right? As in hold it at the top of the tyre and move it out of line.

Lol, kinda obvious they are meant to be tight. ;) Maybe you're tightening them too much?
How long would it take for the nuts to become loose again after tightening them?

I think I know what you mean, are they the onesthat are on the hub side (the inside) of where your drop out would sit when you'd put your wheel on? Dont over tighten them, just keep them a little over finger tight, put your wheel on and forget about them, if something breaks see your LBS :-)

if you have them to tight does the wheel run rough like the break is on.and does it do it any harm if they are too tight. thanks trailfox

If its the cones your talking about, yes you will do damage to the bearings if you over tighten them and run the bike like that. Finger tighten the cone, then there should be like a locking ring behind that to stop it from coming loose, tighten that up and you should be sweet. As others have mentioned before, if you'r hesitant see someone who knows what they're doing.

They should be loose enough to allow the wheel to spin freely - but tight enough so that there is no play. If in doubt have them slightly tighter - less chance of damaging the bearings. Finger tight should be enough.
p.s. your bike has gears so try to avoid pedaling backwards.

thanks mate. quick question, even when i have them really loose there is no play.if they were not done right would it damage the hub. thanks a million jonathan.

Rake them on. If you've no play in the wheel happy days. Sweeten the nuts tight by hand and clamp the wheel in place. If done really wrong they could prob damage the hub a bit, I wouldn't worry though. If you start to get excess play in the wheel- (as speedfreak says bolt the wheel in place and try to move the top of the wheel side to side)- then take them to a shop. Sorted.

ok there is no play in the wheel thats an end to that. the nuts are finger tight.ok the problem is the casatte it is tight to turn and stiff.? ps should there be any play in the casatte will this do damage as i am now not going out tomorrow because of this and i am in the worst of mood and am considering taking a hammer to it.
