don't use wd40 on your chain. it attracts dirt, water and ruins your chain. infact don't use wd40 on your bike at all. 3 in 1 oil is a perfect job for the chain!

i thought you could use wd40 as a chain degreaser as it takes the dirt off and leavs the chain like new. thanks for the advice jonathan.

WD40 may sometimes be a good way to help clean a chain as it is a pretty decent solvent, although you will then need to clean away the WD40 (with something like white spirits, isopropyl alcohol or a strong detergent) as the oil residue which is left behind after the mineral carrier has evaported is very poor as a chain lubricant. Not only is it far too thin to act as an effective lubricant, it's also very tacky and will attract a large amount of dirt in a very short space of time out on the trails. I'd rather use custard on my chain than WD40.
I would recommend Progold ProLink chain lube. To save me extolling its virtues, take a look at this link (http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLqrymode.a4p?f_ProductID=8627&f_FullProductVersion=1&f_SupersetQRY=C237&f_SortOrderID=1&f_bct=c003154c003144c003255) to the Edinburgh Coop web shop, where there's a pretty good mini-review and application instructions. I've found it to be an excellent, clean lube for riding in any British weather (ie. rain, rain, or rain).
