all depends what parts you have on yer rig ,and where you ride an how often,
also how often do you clean it , properly .
Due to the credit cruch hitting , people are getting there bikes serviced tho get maximum life out of them .
Personaly dry whether service and winter sevice is what i do with mine .

I tend to give my bike a complete once over the night before I head out, and I would strip it clean and re-grease everything after a wet muddy ride.

Most of the stuff is very simple to do. The only parts that I can't service myself are the fork and shock.

...until you get it on your rotors and then your brakes are screwed.. id say the same as bikepimps. LBS fees get cheaper as you learn how to fix things if and when they start to show signs of damage, not when they break. :-)

Need to get myself a tin of grease, headset's currently running completely dry as I'd no grease when I was putting on the forks!

It doesn't cover headset bearings (yet), but you may find this guide (http://steveukmtb.wordpress.com/basic-cleaning-and-maintenance-guide/) to basic cleaning/maintenance useful.

the spray greases and especially dry lubes make a very fine mist which can carry the lube so even though you didn't 'spray the brakes' some of the lube can fall on it, id rather take them off and cover up the calipers and then not worry/kick myself because im losing brake power coming down a run ;)
if an oily fingerrint can impede brake performance then lube is alot worse! been there done that.
