My f**king bike has just made me reach and well and truely fall over the cliff of my patience!!! The gears all just f**ked up again there when I went out for a spin, nothing but problem after f**king problem! :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

So, I went for a shower and despite the angry state my mind was in, I came with what hopefully will be a solution to my problems. Sell forks and sell frame (I suspect no-one would buy an old 2001 Bullit that needs some work done), if not to a rider, to someone who wants metal for something. And sell other random stuff that piss me off.

Then get a Glory/Sunday/Socom frame and Team Boxxers, move other stuff onto new stuff and hey presto, a nice, reliable bike instead of a heap of f**king **** that costs more money to run than a friggin oil tanker!!

What do you's think?

Welcome to my world..has been happening to me the past few weeks :annoyed:

go on... just get a new bike :). When a bike gets to such an unreliable stage, you know you've got the best use out of it and that it was a worthwhile investment. (I kinda treat cars the same way). Therefore its time to re-invest for years to come. 0% finance if necessary.
IMO any amount of money can be justified on a bike provided you're making full use of it and pushing new boundaries with it.

SF, what about this beauty? Costs as much as a glory dh frame! You could get team boxxers (or fox 40's with the spare money!) and then sell the 66's on it :D

Just think how quick you'll be on a good bike!

That's true. You'll be at least fractions of seconds quicker :D

On the one hand you're one of the few people who I know who could properly stretch the legs on the bikes you mentioned.
On the other they are hugely expensive, depreciate like a stone, are overkill for this country and your quick enough without "the latest bits".

If I were you ( assuming your trying not to break the bank ) I'd look into a credit union loan, and build a nearly new bike from ebay/ wealthy folk who dont know any better as opposed to going shelling 3k off the bat.

I nearly got a socom from the states for under £500 a while back. Engine re-build and subsequent mechanical issues have put my second bike plans firmly on hold for now but there are some greater bargains out there.

I used to ride a bullit - an 03 one. The gears continually got chewed up under full compression. I originally ran a Rohloff, but changed to 9sp because I was broke. The Rohloff worked flawlessly - but the 9sp mechs got trashed one after the other. There is something about that frame.

New frame, forks and bits sounds like the way to go. Only keep stuff that works perfectly. Also only spec stuff that is simple and proven and compatible.

You'll need new wheels, if you get a DH frame and Boxxers. Probably a new headset, seatpost and BB/cranks (if you get one with a 83mm BB shell like the Sunday).

3 posts just jumped in front of me. My Supreme is for sale...

Thanks for all the input guys, but I'll be needing at least a couple months saving before anything will be got unfortunately...I hate loans too, as was mentioned earlier there! lol ;)

Anything I get will ideally be well cared for 2nd hand stuff anyway, can't afford loads of brand new shiny stuff. :( lol

Pete your right, there really is something about the gears on that bike, ask anyone I ride with, pretty much complaining about gears or how I've ust got them fixed all the time! lol  Oh, and if I was to buy yer bike I'd need a wee spin 1st, but I've no doubt the bike will be top notch! ;)

I'll nab a cheap mech for Scotland, but gearing will be very limited (7 out of 9 will be the heaviest maybe.

Glory seems the most appealing for some reason, but I'm still in love the Horse non-the-less! lol

Have only used two of these in the past 5-6 years, strong, short cage and very little if any hassles yet. Unless you smack one of something of course.
Defo value for money (my opinion of course)

Yeah Pete McD's Supreme DH would be awesome, alternatively why not go for the 2006 team that Steve has in the shop, it is clean as you like because mprules used it about twice since he bought it, great bike and you put a set of 888's on it as I have done with mine which is very very very nice.

Steveb
March 18-2008, 10:29 PM
The Mini DH is not enough bike for James. I've seen him ride, he needs a bigger bike, that boy is fast, and he's no idea just how fast he could be with a decent ride under him and some training under his belt.

My offer stands, if it can be done, I'm happy to do it.

Sounds to me like the answer is simple.

Seroiusly though, if you don't like drivetrain failures and all that stuff, I can't recommend a Rohloff highly enough. I know it's expensive, but in the long run it's worth it. I think so anyway.

Alternatively, you could email Nicolai and ask if they have any 1st gen G-Boxx bikes kicking around. They were trying to get rid of some last year http://nicolai-bikes.blogspot.com/ (see near the bottom).

Conor
March 19-2008, 09:52 AM
James, what ever bike you have you'll break bits off it as well! The more expensive the bike the more it will cost to repair.

Speedfreak
March 19-2008, 03:42 PM
Yeh Conor, but there will be a big difference not only with reliability, but also performance. Fair enough, I know I'll go through many more rear mechs, chains etc, but that's the same with most bikes, but I really think I need 'more' bike! lol. All I have to do is bend the mech hanger part of the swingarm back and get a new mech, but in general I have had it with my bike, it just isn't capable of performing the way I want it to. It was a great bike to start on, truely a joy to ride, but the time has come to move on me thinks (well, in a fee months anyway! lol).

The only things that ever seems to go on me are the gears and rear tyres anyway, so maintanence costs shouldn't be too much more drastic! lol

Conor

Rear shocks
Shock bushings
Wheels
headsets

But you are right, a bigger and better bike will be much more durable, just look after it more when you get it!!

Speedfreak
March 19-2008, 04:43 PM
Shock broke once, bushings were gone ages ago (laziness not getting them fixed, and the shock went because of that! ;)), rear wheel, never the front, and I ride it till it well and truely is done...headsets?? Never replaced the headset yet, but yes, it does need changed! lol :D ;)

I used to own that frame and for the 2 years (or more) that I owned it I ran the same x7 mech, it was one of only two ong term bikes I've ever owned that I never broke a part on.

maybe I used up all it's luck

March 19-2008, 06:56 PM
