Is anybody heading upto Tolly over the holiday period.

We're doing the usual Boxing day DH runs around Tolly. So if anybody wants to hook up with us your more than welcome.

Unfortunately my boxing day tradition is visiting the in-laws.

Biking then Down Royal sounds better to me.

I'm planning on doing the traditional MTBrider ride, this time taking in Tolly and Donard. It'll be XC with a couple of the runs in Tolly and donard for good measure, typical distance is 15 miles.

I'll start a thread once I get it sorted.

Speak for yourself! ;-)

With another similar thread started for the same day, same location it should be a good gathering of MTBriders or non MTBriders. Just bring a bike and enjoy the banter etc etc..

PS Speedfreak your riding should be upto scratch for coming out with us by now as you've probably been out a lot more than me this year.. All joking aside your a good (tall) rider...

Yeh, I think I should be able to keep up a bit better now, got a seasons worth of racing in, and that taught me a few things...but I fell off...alot, so you may go in front of me! lol :D

i'll follow and if you fall off as per norm :( i'll try and tell you what went wrong, Oh no i cant as it will be me yelling at you to get out of the road..

Nerves got you at the racing, conentrate on those and you will perform much better, trust me...

Oh, old wise man, teach me the ways of the samurai DHer!! lol ;)

Yeh, that was my problem and I know it, lost concentration, lost where I was, and in turn could be off the pace! Too many mistakes if I didn't fall off too, maybe I just suck a bit! lol.

You fall off lots as you ride with the bike off the ground too much. Skipping over rocks and roots maybe fast but you are better off learning to keep the tyres on the ground. Anytime I follow down the likes of Parnell's track in Tolly your bike is off the ground more than it is on it!

in theory you should be faster than me, but on a few tracks recently I'm keeping up no problem. From what I've spotted it's the slower technical stuff that gets you. This is where it is critical to have max tyre contact.

But I could be talking BS!

The tyre contact thing, sorry to sound a bit arrogant here, but I couldn't give two fiddlers about it to be honest! lol ;) Once I'm cornering my tyres are firmly on the ground, any other time doesn't matter to me really! :)

Though you are very correct about the tighter, twistier stuff, gets me everytime, that's why I love big, open, well flowing tracks...as does everyone I suppose! lol.

So young and naive :)

No real point debating about this sort of thing as there are a dozen ways to skin a cat.

But you can be much faster. You're more naturally talented than me and should be much faster. You just need time my child ;)

Hahaha, feckin hell! This thread has certainly went tits up from the original topic, more like the chat forum!! lol :D

Well, I understand what you're saying man, and I'm sure at some stage in my 'young and naive' (well said, sums me up nicely! ;)) life I'll take it into consideration and try it out, but for now my sketchy, constant air time style riding will do me nicely! lol ;)

Right, now....emmm...back to the topic! :p

Conor
December 17-2007, 09:35 PM
you're not sketchy, Mark is!!!

Aye, boxing day will be mighty crack. I'll be half way between XC and DH. Ride up the roads but get as many runs as possible in, then over to the trails in Donard :)

Speedfreak

Well, I'm saying nothing! lol :p I guess we can chat about this the next time we are out...or maybe I could get up to Glyn for a couple of lessons! lol

Yeh man, if the same crowd that has been out the last couple of times turns up again it should be good oul craic alright!

What are the runs like in Tolly, difficulty wise? I haven't been on my DH bike for monthes and even then I've only spent the summer on the runs around HT and got up to cavey a few times.

All the trails are easy, they suit all types and skills of riders.

You will enjoy the courses!!

December 24-2007, 09:14 PM
No not really, Is that the road that leads down from tollymore into newcastle itself or is it round on the moneyscalp side?

MrNuts
December 24-2007, 09:20 PM
Its the road in Bryansford, top of the village heading towards scalp

keyserni
December 24-2007, 09:32 PM
Is that the one with the stone gatehouse and cloverleaf openings?

Speedfreak
December 25-2007, 03:03 AM
Right, if you are coming into Bryansford from Newcastle/Castlewellan direction you pass a Post Office on your left. About 100metres on up the small hill in front of you, the back (exit) gates are on your left, and everyone parks along the road on the opposite side of that exit.

If you are coming Moneyscalp direction, the gates will simply be on your right just as you enter the village, and, funnily enough, the road everyone parks along is on your left this time. If you pass the Post Office on your right then you have gone too far!

You can't really miss the herds of bikers either! lol ;)

Ok think I have the directions sorted and i've just put the bikes in the boot so will hopefull see you about tomorrow. Cheers for the help.

Conor
December 26-2007, 06:16 PM
Was a cracker day out. Pity we lost the other guys at the first run, but at least we got loads of riding done.

Parnell's in Tolly, the moor al the way round the forest to Donard, the Quarry track and back up to the the DH run near the river. Then to O'Hare's for a quick one. Then back up the road to Bryansford. Not long in. 5 hours :)

The other lads seemed to head back pretty early? Get much riding done?

Speedfreak
December 26-2007, 06:44 PM
Apart from the drunkeness, sobering up and then hangover effects I felt throughout the spin it was a great days riding! :D

Havn't done that trip across the mountains to Donord from Tolly, twas good!

Good day. We got back to the cars at just after 3 I think. Kenny left early as he's suffering from Sat's fall, Keith left a bit later as he had other commitments.

We did a different route back into Tolly from Doarn which was a really nice route, will use that in future.

Saw Paul from BD and a few other in Tolly but didn't see Smurf or any of the DH boys, get they get out?

Ow. Fair play for Kenny getting out full stop! Never got the chance to mock him, erm, I mean console him about his crash ;)

What route did you go back? The fire road up past the houses and the reservoir? That's by far the best way back from Donard.

Don't know about you Steve but we had a great day. Not too often I get to ride the bike for 4 hours and get four tracks done!

We had a good day. We wanted to do a bit more mileage instead of runs up and down. Enjoyed the trip to Donard and the blast down the Champs course. Should be out again on Friday.
