Following on from this thread (http://www.mtbrider.com/mtbr/showthread.php?t=14221) NTSR are proud to present "The Slieve Martin Slaughter"
Date 10 November 2007
Assemble Foresters Hut Kilbroney Park
Time 9.00am sharp
Elevation gain 485 meters X 4 times = 1940 meters (at least!!)
Slieve Martin cairn stands 485 meters above Rostrevor Village and there are 4 different routes that will take you almost to the peak. We intend to ride / walk / crawl to the cairn at Slieve Martin by the 4 different routes and come back down a different way each time taking a lot of the singletrack in the area whilst doing so. To my knowledge it has never been done before and after next week it may never be done again!! The good thing about this is that you are never very far from the start point and if you want to go home after one, two or three ascents you can with ease.
So who’s coming to Rostrevor for one of the toughest MTB challenges this year??
** NTSR will not be responsible for anyone on this spin. Please ensure that you will be fully self sufficient for the day out**

The Slieve Martin Slaughter is now featured on TrailBadger.com (http://www.trailbadger.com/set-yourself-a-challenge/), given its immediacy.
Other ones will be going up soon.

Whats this nonsense about "almost" to the peak ! The cairn must be touched 4 times . I will not insist on returning to absolute sea level everytime .....or will I?

Good spot! I think that each person should take a rock from the cairn and get their feet wet in the sea at the top and bottom each time.

Just wondering, but where would the DH trails be on that map (which of those mountains?). Just so I know roughly how to get there... :-)

Big up to you guys, looks like a great ride.
I seriously thought I was going to be up for a ride with you lot in the near future, then on the 2nd climb of the day outta the lower carpark two of your guys overtook me. I was riding, they were pushing! I really can't tell you just how soul destroying that was. I'd like to put it down to the fact I was on the Supreme, but the guy on the Postie bike over took me also :(
Still, just mean I gotta push harder and harder to get to your level I guess!

hey ivan, it was a HARD push up, and a simply terrifying ride down! but someone had to deliver the spare parts to all the lads having mechanical trouble on the day.

Good effort, sorry I missed this. For those that did it, will you ever do it again?
PostbikeMan = savage!

Yes we will as there are a few who had to cut the day short or were not able to do it due to family and other commitments. I'll keep you informed. We (NTSR) may even make it into a race as there are lots of mtb'ers that like to do things that are a little "mad"!! I'd say times will range from 5.5 hours to 10 hours!!
4 monster ascents and 4 fantastic descents, almost 50km and 2400 meters of climbing. Watch this space ......

I'll give this a go next time. Doubt I'll manage all 4 loops, but should be good for 2.

a true epic - well done to the magnificent 7! 10 hours sounds about right to me! Must give this one a go - sometime not soon.
