Mtbing in TOLLYMORE, DRUMKEERAGH or KILBRONEY on saturday ?
Perhaps not ! There is a Rally on in these forests on saturday.
Rathfriland MC’s FM Contracts Down Rally will be held on 20th October 2007. This year’s event is based in Castlewellan Forest Park as the centralised service park for the event.
For 2007 there is 7 miles of smooth flowing roads in the TOLLYMORE forest park complex and DRUMKEERAGH forest stage. These stages, combined with the popular 5 mile KILBRONEY test will provide a sterling test.

Unless this rally is vastly different to others, I'm guessing the cars will stay on the fireroads, and not go through dense sections of woodland. So I think I can safely say, as long as your in the woods your alright! :D

Be careful if you are in tolly. The stage finish is at the gate we normally go in if you go in from moneyscalp carpark. The cars will be on the fireroads, so make sure that you aren't crossing the stage if you cross the fire roads. Impreza WRC v DH MTB, Impreza 1, MTB 0, if you know what I mean!

Marko, Im pretty sure that road is part of the stage, if its the same one I am thinking about. In which case, cycling down it would be a *very* bad idea...

I'm going anyway.
You can go in through the gardens/plantations as normal, ride up the rover path to the bottom of the corkscrew and push up from there.

How long does the stage last in moneyscalp/Tolly Ninja? I'm going up to 'scalp on the 27th.
Or does it just last the one day?

Thats the good old northern irish spirit there. Imagine a DH race crossed a fireroad but the other forest users "didn't give a toss about the DH race", This place would be full of bitching. But no, I suppose having a little bit of tolerance for what other people are doing is a bit too much to ask. After all, they are using the stage for a whole 5 and a half hours one day of the year. How unreasonable is that?

and proud of it. away to tolly now! :) i have nothing against the race, my problem lies with fs and the pathetic civil servants of Northern Ireland.

Any idea how much the organisers were charged for the use of the 3 forests? By right it should be 1500 quid.

What an awsume day. The trails are bone dry, and running sweet.

Emmm....Its got nothing to do with fs or the civil service.... But you know, you make your stand Marko! You show them...how irresponsible and inconsiderate bikers are, and how they don't give a toss about other forest users. Yeah, you made your point excellently.
I hope the rally went well.

The forest should be for everyone, not just the walkers.
If they want a rally there fine, if they want a naked mud wresling contest there fine, but also if we want to ride there that should be allowed. Every body should be allowed to appreciate the fantastic forest that we have here, not reserve it for the few!

before people think i am some ignorant fool i would like to make my statement clear:
i feel that Mr Nuts has basically said what i wanted to say except in a less aggressive manor. I want the forest to be used for recreational purposes, i also was pleased to see the rally in the forest. i am however annoyed that a level playing field is not adopted. i feel that it is unfair that i pay taxes but yet am unable to enjoy the forest in the manor that i wish.

Personally its a bit of a tricky one.
I know the fs let mtb races occur in tollymore (the xc champs few months back) and in previous years theres been a downhill race.
That rally was the first in about 30 years apparently in tolly.
The big differance between the 2 is that we/the organisers have to go and build a bike trail to race on, with the knowledge that any knarly/fun jumps will be destroyed after the race.
The rally got to use the fireroads. And personally i think they ripped them to ****. Some of the fireroads are more like landrover tracks now.
But i still think its great to see a rally in there, just wish that when we get to do a downhill race in tully, that its a decent track that will remain once race days over, with the race features on it.
