View Full Version : A bit early but, Mega Avalanche 2008
Conor
October 09-2007, 10:03 PM
Last time we took 6 months to organise it and still left the ferry to the week before...
Anyway, big thing for this year is the race has been moved two weeks earlier in July,
7th-13th July!!!
For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about it's basically the ultimate MTB experience, 22miles of single track, glacier and rocks descending 2700mts. With 399 other riders at the same time!
Here's an idea:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L51D8oI_1mE
http://www.mournemtb.com/conor/Mountain%20Biking/Mega%20Avalanche%202007/index.html
If you are interested post here.
Due to lessons learned last year, anybody who wants to go MUST pay in full by APRIL 2008. We're aiming for DaveB's van full with 8-10 bikes plus one passenger, plus two cars (my estate plus another decent sized car) with 4 in each car to make it economical. Ferry via Belf-Stranraer and Dover-Calais.
Accommodation will be in Alpe D'Huez through Rob's industry links (basically a week will cost you about £40).
We'll probably leave the sat/sun before the event and leave the day after it. Total cost will be about £400, give or take. There is scope to run this into a two week holiday incorporating a week in Les Deux alps if holiday times and funds allow!
Entry opens in January 2008, www.avalanchetrophy.com
PS, if any girls are interested I know of one or two that are heading over that would love the support! Either contact me or PM Fiorelli on this forum.

7th-13th July!!!
happy fookin days, will have no sweat getting off work then!!!! :)
mega avalanche 2007= stella (in moderation of course), puking at 3400m, destroyed rear mechs, smoking the english, sunshine, 'green ice', unhappy french fuzz, sweet sweet miles of trails. LES DUEX ALPS is the place to be and we done nowhere near all the tracks, danny near falling off a 100 foot cliff, 'rob rob rob', anyone for a shucksmith??, spud heads, sideways action, the best section of singletrack in the world, a very sunburnt irish man ;) some fine wines and the best cider in the world, my excellent cooking, smoking the english who thought they were cool (better look next year boys on your expensive rigs), motorway driving, dodgy travel bookings, a scottish fella who got a little bit saturday night Glasgow with us, 'healy healy'!!!
thetrailbuilder
October 09-2007, 10:15 PM
fook it im going, £400 is no big deal
Conor
October 09-2007, 10:16 PM
I knew that would make you happy!
Last yer the MTBRider lot put on a great show, with an inspirational ride from Conor Mansell who was at the time over coming a huge and painful knee surgery and technically couldn't ride a bike who managed to qualify for the Promo race and come from the back row to finish 173rd ish.
I think DaveB also did well, apparently he qualified for the main race or something.... doesn't matter though as he's a 'roid abuser ;)

October 09-2007, 10:16 PM
A strong possiblity for me.
I commend your efforts of early organisation. This has potential for the longest thread ever. It'll still be up in the air a few weeks to go!!;)
Conor
October 09-2007, 10:20 PM
No it wont! Ferry will be booked in April or so as it's half the price compared to booking it last minute! I'm entering as soon as it enters so I can get another free top and get a decent quali position this time!
When I said £400, that's what it cost us this year, but if we book early and have a couple full cars it'll cost a good bit less.

already picking lines from earthed 3 section
Conor
October 09-2007, 10:37 PM
You can't pick lines. the lines you pick are the places on the mountain where there are no slow English/Dutch/German riders in front of you!!! Either that or you have to walk!

October 11-2007, 12:30 AM
What sort of bikes are you going bring? What to you take to that sort of event, you dont need pure DH speed you need something that'll take 22 miles of hits which could include other riders.
marko
October 11-2007, 08:20 PM
bike is not really important to be honest, people were on big rigs, hardtails, all mountain rigs etc etc. Speed and fitness are not important really, a bit of stamina would help.

I think Geneva/Grenoble is the nearest 'port and it's a good few dozen miles from Alpe D'Huez. All I know is the lads that flew in from Dublin had to pay €200 to get from the air port to the resort.

Plan so far is:
My car
Pete's car plus two passengers.
Ideally we want to take a van to carry bikes so we can bring two cars with four in each. Failing that it'll be 3 per car.
Nothing is confirmed until I get a deposit and commitment.
Want in my car, then pay me your share of the ferry. Booking it end of next month.

anyone who is wanting to go should enter asap. si paton has been plugging the mega every since he got back from it last year. Having spoke to alot of people on descent-world i can say the interest in it this year is huge!
for an extra 2 euro you can get a cancellation option up to 10 days before the race. so there is no harm in filling an entry in what so ever!
thetrailbuilder
January 16-2008, 09:03 AM
done and dusted, so conor, what day we leaving?? lol
Conor
January 16-2008, 09:10 AM
Probably sat 5th July or sunday 6th July. It'll take about 30-36 hours to get there. If we leave Sunday morning we'll not get there until monday evening. If we leave Saturday Morning we'll get there Sunday night, ready for biking on Monday morning.

If you don't have a race license you need a note from a doctor you're not likely to collapse or die, i.e. if you have any existing medical conditions that prevent you from taking part.

If any of you guys are interested in some plush accomodation at fairly reasonable prices. A bunch of us from Epic and MBCC will be staying in some tricked out ski challets with sauna jacuzzi etc. We had one last year and we'll probably be taking 2 this year. It worked out at €300 for 2 weeks last year but if we fill them about €200. Its looking good for filling them as we only have 7 places left to fill. If this interests you let me know.
Conor
January 16-2008, 10:24 PM
Keep you posted on that one Al!!
Just got a quick ferry qoute. Going to be around £350 for a 10 day return on the ferry for a car plus 4.
Ferry + fuel + tolls will be circa £180 each.
Just emailed Nutt for a quote, should drop the Ferry price by £50-£75 or so.

James, have you entered then?
Well, slight problem...you see there a M3 frame for sale on Descent-World, and I'm waiting for the dude to get back with the size and price. It's £900 with saints cracks, Avid brakes etc, some pretty expensive gear with it so the frame itself might be cheap enough. Sooooo, if that's the case I'm thinking of getting it! :) I'll be getting a nice wee sum of money over the next couple of weeks you see, so if it's not sold by then and the size and price is right......
If not, then Mega shall be entered! ;)

OK, been researching the ferry options.
basically as it's over the twelfth holidays the ferry form belfast-stranraer is going to be about £80 more than normal. And it will book up very quickly.
I'm going to book my car in with three passengers through Nutt tomorrow.
Leaving the Sat before the Mega and returning on the Monday after, with the Stran-Belf ferry on Saturday evening.
PS James, don't be a a square, **** the bike and go on the holiday. You have no idea of how good it is.
If I had the choice between biking for a year over here on a sweet bike and riding for a week in the Alps at the Mega and not be able to ride for the rest of the year here...... the latter every time.

Crilly. I have to pick Speedfreak, Mark and Joanne up on the way to the ferry so Crilly with you makes sense to me. If he annoys you you can throw him in the boot or something.

I've been reading it again and it does look like the whole event has shrunk by two days!!
Practice starts on the TUESDAY, sprint DH is on the WEDNESDAY Mega quali is on FRIDAY and race is on SATURDAY.
That doesn't leave much time for riding Les Deux Alps :(
We've booked ferrys so we'll be there sunday 6th to monday 14th. That means no lift passes on either Monday 7th or Sunday 13th. Or am I wrong??

But in all seriousness I'll give you a shout at lunch time, we're going to have to organise an extra car or something if pete cant take a bike for me. Danny might go anyway so another car would do the job. As far as it's stands you are with pete, but if mark drives there's a spare seat.

Right guys.... thanks for the money for the ferry etc. All booked now. The only thing left are the hotels on the way there and the way back.
We are booking into a hotel on the Sunday night in Calais. Just deciding on which one. We have two choices, a) hotel @ €27 each but with no secure parking, or, b) hotel @€34 each with secure parking. It's your choice. We'll be doing the same on the way back so budget that in as well. I'll leave it up to you guys.... but we are DEFINITELY staying over in a hotel of some description each way, in Calais each time. I drove it straight last time, not this time.
The return journey.... as the race is on Saturday I'm thinking we get rat-arsed sat night, get up at our leisure on Sunday and drive to Calais on Sunday sometime late morning or lunch time. That means we can stay over in Calais on Sunday night, get a ferry on Monday morning and be back for Monday night.
How does that sound? I think that's the best bet as we'll be doing f-all on Sunday anyway. No way am I riding a bike after the Mega Avalanche and with a big hang-over...

Oh, BTW Mark, remember to get a number plate with an EU flag on it for the rack, there's nowhere to stick a GB/NI/IRL/SCO sticker/plate on. Wikis do them, £10.

How did your training program end up going?
It didnt, but Conor says not to worry as it is all downhill :banghead:
Elbow is well on the mend which was worrying me more than the fitness to be honest

Yeah, getting there. Just got to pick up the other guy's stuff realy. Got the MP3 player wired into the stereo last night so no crappy French radio for me :)
Think I've over packed on tools... Pete what are you taking? My tool box now weighs more than my bike and I need to cut back on some stuff. BTW Pete.... I don't answer my phone in work during the day... too expensive.
