OK I need a wee bit of help please... a friend and I are thinking of heading out to Moneyscalp for the first time some weekend soon (should have been away today:rolleyes: ).
He is a new edition to the way of DH mtb and I have about a year and a half's experience of mtb. I'm wondering which trail would be the best for, as I put it, a 'miss out everything run' and then build it up as we get more confident.

I myself have never ventured into scalp as such but have had a wee looksee on the net etc... so would it be the one which ends closest to the gate/entrance?

And would you just follow the trail up or is there another way to get to the top?
My friend also want's to know if a standard (non-full face) helmet would be ok. I have two other fullface ones but I don't know if they would fit him well (I told him to get measurements today).

Or maybe one of you guy's would be around maybe next weekend (if the weather's goodish) just incase we get lost?:D

thanks
-Jonny

best walk up the trail, so you know what to expect on the way down

Walk up the track and you will see that everything you think you need to avoid can be easily avoided. Nothing comes up on you with no warning.

My mate didnt own a full face, but one day he was at scalp and i couldnt go i lent him my own full face.

That time he was there he has a massive spill and needed stiches on his cheek. He face planted really bad and if it werent for the full face could easily have been a broken jaw.

Full faces are a good buy.

Thanks guys! would a fullface be essential for my friend though?

EDIT:
oops sorry, a bit late at posting... Thanks Tiff! I'll tell him what you said ;-)

well trailfox, your friend definitely doesnt need a helmet if he doesnt fall or if he does fall and isnt really bothered about his head or his face.
Otherwise it is better to be safe especially if he is just starting. A full face would also give him more confidence.

Yea, I told him that his 'standard' helmet would be better than nothing, but I also told him that I would,

'...be wearing a full face and knee/shin armour. Sounds like alot, but that's because I like hurting myself :D ;-) '
He still hasn't replied with those measurements so I'm hoping at least one of them fits, for his sake.. and confidence of course.

Sorry if this is a silly question but, what sort of difficulty is moneyscalp... is it that sort of thing that, the higher up you go the more technical you get (like the ranger in kilbroney told me once about the champs course)? And what's it like after that big rain we had back in the summer? Bad? Or has it all healed up again?

don't listen to rangers mate as they talk pure dung. 'scalp is 100% for all types of rider and can be done on a rigid by a complete novice.

Thanks marko, I'm not so worried now, I think we'll just leave the 'ranger' topic as it is, as to not bring back the FS rants :D ;-)

I've just found out I'll be staying in the caravan in tolly this weekend so that cuts out around 10miles of cycling :-)
So is there anyone that goes down there often that'll be hanging around? Maybe just to show us the trails etc.?

My wee bro, 11 years old, was able to do it on his cheap hardtail the first time he went. If he can, so can you's! ;)
