Cycling Ireland MTB News

Irish Downhill received a major boost with the news that Joe Ward has been installed as Cycling Ireland’s new International DH Manager/Coordinator. The position became vacant following the resignation of Eamonn Lawlor in March. Joe’s position was confirmed on Thursday evening following a meeting with Cycling Ireland’s High Performance Director Frank Campbell, and Off Road Commission Chairman Andy Potts.

Joe Ward has been a long time servant to Irish DH as both rider and race organiser, and has experience of racing all over Britain and Europe. Last summer Joe crowned his DH career by lifting the European Masters title. At present the new Irish DH Manager is on crutches after cracking his heel bone while racing at the opening round of the Maxxis Cup in Portugal in March. Following the news of his appointment, Joe issued the following statement:

“I am delighted to be appointed as the new manager, as it was something I had always envisaged doing in the future (in my forties!!).This opportunity came earlier than anticipated with the resignation of Eamonn to whom I extend great respect and thanks".

This new start for Irish DH received a further boost on Friday morning with Glyn O’Brien confirming that he had accepted the role of Irish DH Coach. Glyn has been one of Ireland’s top DH riders over the past ten years, his International experience and world renowned skills will be of great benefit to the new Irish DH Team.

Cycling Ireland’s HP Manager Frank Campbell welcomed Joe to his new post, stating that he would support Joe as much as possible. On behalf of the Off Road Commission Andy Potts welcomed Joe and Glyn to their new roles, declaring it as a bright new start for Irish DH, and appealed to the entire DH community to give Joe and Glyn their full support.
