Seems mad, but according to one report it's presently being considered by Belfast Council.

The Belfast Telegraph has run an article about plans for a massive leisure park at Belfast Foreshore and hidden deep in the article is mention of a Cave Hill cable car!

The article says...

"A vast Giant's Park - which could feature a ferris wheel and a nature park - is to be created at Belfast's Foreshore on an area of wasteland equivalent to 200 football pitches. And Belfast City Council is calling on the people of Northern Ireland to help design the gigantic new amenity."

It goes on to say...

"The vast site could be accessed by a footbridge across the neighbouring M2 motorway or by cable car from the top of Cave Hill, under more plans being considered by Belfast City Council."

Whilst a cable car on Cave Hill has mentioned mentioned in the past, it's never been taken seriously, however if the article is correct Belfast City Council are at least considering the option.

Well **** on me. I was up Cavey yesterday cursing the place for the long walk. Although I can't see bike being catered for.

I don't mean to be the bringer of bad news, but I was on the Mountainbiking NI website yesterday to read on any trail developments, and the person they have down as being responsible for shared access paths on cavehill (ie - mountain biking) has long since left the council.

He has not been replaced.

The person acting up at the minute isn't looking after any of his previous parks access work. So basically, progress has stopped and doesn't sound like it is going to start again until he is replaced.

The cable car thing is part of the redevelopment of the dargan landfill site as I understand it, which will be taken care of by a different section (probably development), but i would put money on their progress being halted as they will have nobody in Parks to liase with until, again, this guy is replaced.

It sounds good, but if it's going from the Dargan landfill site up to the top of the Cavehill is it not pretty useless???

If it would stop half way up (at the castle) then we'd be suckin' diesel...as long as bikes are allowed!

Or just design a trail that runs from the top of Cavehill all the way to Dargan. Should be a decent length! Where there's a will there's a way.

Aye you could have a road gap over the M2/M5.

Not the first time a cable car has been talked about in relation to Cavehill.

Think they need to get trails in first, Barry is right it doesn't seem to have moved on any since Colm left.

from the web site

An iconic ‘living landmark’ pedestrian and cycle bridge traversing the 6 lane M2 motorway will connect the communities of North Belfast to the education facility and the Giant's Park. This very unusual bridge has the potential to be a world class structure, defining the Giant's Park project and acting as an important gateway to the city of Belfast from the north. This component of the project should be delivered to compete with the very best contemporary bridge projects in the world.

no need to jump the m2/m5.

As they are looking for feedback/suggestions why don't we make it known that we want some sort of MTB provision?
